Gantt V4 - more power / better UX
complete
Vidas
We have planned a major increment for Gantt view.
We will focus on three dimensions here:
- Add core capabilities: editable duration, split schedule into start/due separate fields, watchers as a field, comments as a field
- UX - more in place editing
- Viewing - different modes and zooming capabilities to jump between more data or more calendar on the screen

Closing this one since major part of scope has been done. And I am splitting away Gantt zoom functionality request.

It would be great to have separate UnDo button instead of those notification messages with undo button,

Artin Melikian deffo supporting this! Present message should be short in Time enough not being annoying and also Long enough to be seen and used: i often find myself considering it short when i need it and too long when i don't (maybe it's me but i often work in the bottom right corner for the last added task and it covers It precisely!)

Vidas As part of the UX update, will it be possible to click and drag the duration of the task on the calendar in the Gantt view?
Vidas
Alexis Hargrave: thank you for bringing up. Just to clarify: do you mean scheduling items where you create a new item and then click+drag to draw the whole bar?

Vidas Yes, that's what I was thinking :-)

Great move @Vidas !
I add two points from a mail conversation we had on April 23 (before using canny). Maybe you can update em here?
Very briefly, i labeled as
1 "weekends" / working days ...
2 "dependencies/autoschedule" ...
Your answer was
- Yes, correct, not implemented yet.
- Will investigate this
I din't notice any news about this since then, maybe i lost something or maybe this is the time..

prima prova: Regading calendars and exclusions, we have this item: https://teamhood.canny.io/feature-requests/p/resource-calendar-for-people-vacations-holidays-main-use-workload-and-timeline. It would cover gantt as well. But it is not started yet. In the current Gantt V4 it will be out of scope, too large.
Regarding dependencies/autoscheduling, this will change at least towards your explained direction in our correspondece, because until now we have not treated duration as a fixed data point. But we will change that and if user enters 4 days of duration - it will be respected as 4 working days (excluding weekends).

I voted this request to support a real zoom function witch the product has not atm, and i see after a brief talk that maybe, someday, i will have a yearly option. That's not my point, so i add this comment to help the end result.
Anyone using seriously Gantt charts knows that a zoom function means calendar side, no need to ask, and also means not having to use submenus; plus, today's menu is not for timescale only, so more clicks to go in and out of it.
As any user i very often need to go quickly in detail to adjust things (++ ) then get back out to see the whole picture (--). I cannot do this fast now and it's pretty frustrating.
Another important point showing that real zooming function and your timescale options are different Is the following: let's say i'm daily monitoring a milestone on Dec 18, then i want to zoom out without losing that important date and i cannot: if i change to weeks i lose my date reference (that's why some put the date near the diamond in the chart, but you don't, some others just add the week number without clearing the date(s) off).

prima prova: this is very helpful. Thank you for taking time and explaining. Which hotkeys are most common for you to zoom in/out? CTRL+mouse scroll? CTRL + or any other?
Vidas
Luis Ceballos can you elaborate a bit which scenario is of the most interest to you:
A) You would like to zoom in/out calendar side so more days/months fit in?
B) You would like to zoom in/out full Gantt so that more items would fit in?
C) You would like to zoom in/out full Gantt so that both more items and more days/months would fit in?
Luis Ceballos
Vidas: Hi Vidas! I'm thinking about the Gantt view on the right hand side specifically. It would be great to resize in order to compress the years and quarters (similar to resizing columns in excel) so we can see longer term projects at a high level and then zoom in to a granular level.
Vidas
Luis Ceballos: just to make sure I understand correctly - you have tried scale options and they are of no help, right?
Luis Ceballos
Vidas: I did try this, but our project has a fairly large timeline and even the quarterly option doesn't allow us to see the project in a bigger picture. Maybe adding a yearly option?
Vidas
Luis Ceballos: adding yearly option is definitely a far cleaner solution from product perspective. Thank you for taking time to explain everything. Now we need to wait a bit to see whether this one gets more attention from our userbase.

Vidas I feel a big part of why zooming is a good approach is that I oftentimes want to view my whole gantt. So if months is too small and year is way to big, there is no way to fit the whole project, however big or small it might be, within one screen.
